100 book covers to fight illiteracy

For the occasion of the Brussels Expo, organized in cooperation with Muntpunt, we decided to add 10 Belgian titles to the list. Readers from 2 national newspaper selected their top 5 (a french and a dutch one). We found another 10 Belgian artists willing to join in and the result will be on display in 3 locations in Brussels (Passa Porta book shop, Tropismes book shop and the Muntpunt library) until World Book Day on april 23rd. On april 23, these 10 new works will be auctioned for charity during the grand public closing event of the I BOOK YOU literacy festival. There will also be a pop-up poster sale of the DoeDeMee collection.

100 book covers to fight illiteracy

In february 2012, Belgium based design studio beshart started an international co-creation project to raise awareness for the problem of illiteracy called "DoeDeMee? 100 Book Covers To Fight Illiteracy". 100 artists from 28 countries joined in and each re-covered a book from the list "100 Greatest Novels Of All Time" by Robert McCrum (Observer, 2003).
The new designs were printed at poster size and revealed to public on World Literacy Day (september 8, 2012), hoping this collection could draw the attention of people who take reading for granted and make them think about the fact that it is not for nearly 800.000.000 adults. You can admire them here.

Posters are for sale on wallcandy.be, for each poster sold, 5 euro goes to a UNESCO litteracy program in Senegal.

If you want the expo to come to your town, team up with your local literacy organisation or library and contact us for more info.
