Pelléas et Mélisande by Maurice Maeterlinck

Pelléas et Mélisande is a Symbolist play by Maurice Maeterlinck, about an impossible love and the jealousy between three people: Melisande, Golaud and Pelléas. The piece has the atmosphere of legends, it takes place outside of time. The characters have no history.

The work

The poster for Pelléas et Mélisande plays on the triangular relationship between Melisande and the two brothers, Pelléas and Golaud. The rational representation in the form of a sum contrasts sharply with the feelings and emotions associated with such complicated love affair. The tight typography aims to rule out all emotions and feelings. The vertical position and reading of the words portrays the confusion.

The artist: Annelies Vaneyckenfrom Brussels (BEL)

Annelies Vaneycken (1976) richtte in 1999 mee het ontwerpbureau Trans-ID op en is er tot op heden grafisch ontwerper. Ze kiest om vooral voor culturele, artistieke en educatieve klanten te werken.

Daarnaast werkt Annelies Vaneycken aan zelfgeïnitieerde projecten. Hierbij onderzoekt ze de rol en het auteurschap van haar beroep, daar waar het raakvlakken heeft met andere disciplines en met maatschappelijke thema’s en bekommernissen. Haar interesse voor sociale thema’s in relatie tot andere culturen verwerkte ze in autonome projecten, waaronder Expedition Francka (Frankrijk/Slovenië, 2008), Repórter sem Beiras (Rio de Janeiro, 2011) en The Regenerators (Turijn, 2012).

Sinds 1999 doceert Annelies Vaneycken in de opleiding Grafisch ontwerp aan LUKA, School of Arts in Brussel. Ze zetelt tevens in jury’s, geeft workshops en lezingen. In 2007 ontving ze de tweejaarlijkse Prijs voor Beeldende Kunst en Vormgeving van de provincie Vlaams-Brabant.
